Rocky Mountain Sports Medicine Foundation

The Rocky Mountain Sports Medicine Foundation is a non-profit organization centered in Durango led by Rich Lawton, MD, PhD, of Durango Orthopedics and Mercy Medical Center. The goal of this foundation is to cover the shortage of athletic trainers for high school events in the region.

The Mission Statement

  • To maintain a network of community- and team-oriented providers who will provide health care, including initial evaluation and expedited physician care, to athletes including those participating in regional high school, college, as well as amateur and professional events
  • To educate providers about topics of interest with the intention of improving the quality of care and to improve regional expertise and develop esprit de corps among regional provides
  • To raise funds in support of these goals and award scholarships to athletes interested in careers in sports medicine
